I GOT UU BABE!

I think we all went through every one of these steps when planning our teen conference. We were nervous, as it was going to be the first one held in quite a while in this district. Even up to the week before the conference ; we were struggling with commitment , registrations, and buy-in. I know there were a a few times that we felt like we fell back onto the second ” I can’t do it.” step. But, we persisted.

This is what we came up with in the end….(and this photo was taken on the second day after many folks had to leave early.)

We all have busy lives. It’s hard to commit and stay committed. In this age of social media, there are more and more things waved in front of us than we can ever TRY to accomplish !

Every action that you participate in, has a result. I try to pick the activity that will best help me grow, that challenges me, my intellect and my comfort level. I pick the activity that may have a positive impact on someone else as well as myself. I try. Sometimes it happens! Sometimes it’s not that easy.

When you do the hard thing, then come out the other side; I hope you revel in what you’ve accomplished! Feel good that you’ve made a plan and stuck to it. It is no surprise that seemingly little actions have a big impact at times.

I just received an email from a parent of a young man who attended our “I Got UU Babe” conference. After our social outreach portion of the conference , which focused on “Standing on the Side of Love”, he moved up a few steps from the ”I want to” step to the “I’ll try to “ step…and is planning on starting a “Standing on the Side of Love” group in his high school. Wow.

I know that all of you will “have his back”, and say ”I Got U , Babe!”

Dear RE Families,

Thanks for attending the Intergenerational service this past Sunday! I had so much fun and I hope you did as well. Thanks to all who brought food donations! We filled the large collection box in fellowship all with all of your generous treats!

During our One Room School House on February 19th, I will be discussing some themes present in the story “How Hare Built Her Hut” . There will also be activities so that all children can help build another type of “home” for our feathery friends! And…kids can take part in some more drumming…we have a special guest returning who is interested in starting a kids drumming group here at UUCW!! Come talk to her on Feb 19th!

How We Build Our Hut

On Sunday, February 5th at 11:00 we are preparing a very special intergenerational service. This service will be
an interactive experience for all ages and I hope you will make a point to attend . The story that we will tell
during the service is “How Hare Built Her Hut”. We hope you will recognize the themes that will spring forth
from the fun story and appreciate how wonderful our own “village” here at UUCW is and can continue to be.
As Aaron, the Religious Education Committee, and I met to begin planning this service, discussions about
what we as a church community have to offer our “village” ensued. It is amazing, the talent, that walks
through our building every week. What is even more amazing is the willingness of those talented people to
share.
I think about the children first, of course, and how much personality and joy they bring just by entering a
room. I sat with a four year old yesterday as he described to me in detail how to make his favorite recipe from
a cookbook he had at home: chocolate soda! I now know you need a quarter cup of chocolate syrup, a half cup
of carbonated water, vanilla ice cream, and to stir it very well. Oh yes, and you must have a straw! He was
pretty passionate about his cookbook, just like so many others in this church are about their hobbies and
vocations.
In our village, we’ve built a hut. Sometimes it’s a challenge to keep it warm, looking pretty, or to keep the
water out. But the one thing I know is that so many of us are passionate about this hut of ours and all hands
together can bring it to where it needs to be. We have the talent: the educators, business owners, trades
people, artists, administrators, organizers, technical gurus, clergy, cheerleaders, musicians, actors and
caregivers. We are so very fortunate.
So stop by the 11:00 service on February 5th, bring your passion, your open heart, your sense of humor, and a
offering of food for the food pantry…and help us celebrate our community of talent. This is how we build our hut.

GIVING TREE…

Giving Tree

Please return grocery store gift cards this Sunday Dec 11, place them in the gray box outside of the church office. If you didn’t have a chance before and would still like to donate a gift card, there are still a few left on our giving tree. You could bring it back by Sunday evening or sometime within the week. We will hand them out on Saturday Dec18th during the food pantry distribution, so we will really need them by Friday night, Dec17. There is still time to bring in socks for adults and hats and mittens for adults and .kids! Place them on or under the giving tree. Thanks so much for your generosity and all the special ways you are reaching out this holiday season and every time there is a need. We are truly a congregations that gives!

RE NEWS for Sunday December 11, 2011

I am wondering how everyone is doing with their “Giving Tree” challenge? Has your child been able to place stickers on their tree after doing something special for someone else this week? I have spoken with quite a few parents and children who are reporting some interesting results. I hear there is a lot of hugging going on!!

Please check out our new Religious Education bulletin board display! Betty Jenewin , who has graciously gifted this church with her gorgeous photographs and bulletin board displays has passed the baton to Vickie Cox-Lanyon, Pete Lanyon, Alison Lanyon, Katie Cooney and Bart Hill. I would like to thank Betty for her years of dedication to this special project and I would like to wish her well as she moves into other areas of interest in the church such as the church website and the Mass ReLeaf project! This time our photos are provided by Pete Lanyon and the bulletin board display is by Vickie Cox -Lanyon, Alison Lanyon and Katie Cooney.

You will also see the new addition of the COA tiles in the church hallway made by our 2011 COA graduates.The tiles are beautifully displayed on a custom -made frame designed and constructed by Bart Hill.

Finally, please add your name to a leaf for our “Ancestral Tree”, designed and constructed by the high school ”A Place of Wholeness” class and located in Fellowship Hall. Help us recognize and celebrate our Unitarian Universalist “roots and wings.”

Giving Tree

NO RE OR NURSERY or Worship Service AT 9:00 AM

11:00 RE and Nursery . One Room School- House. ”The Giving Tree.”

All Children please start in sanctuary. When announced, we will proceed out into fellowship hall. Some children will be collecting food donations from folks in the pews and loading the food into the “shopping cart” for our special After -Thanksgiving Collection.

During our One- Room School House, entitled “The Giving Tree”, we will explore the season of giving in a different light:

Happy Thanksgiving!! The holidays are upon us! The funny thing about the holidays is that they seem to rev -up the desire for material things for our children. We go from being “thankful” at the Thanksgiving table, to something totally different in a matter of days. Blame the media, black Friday, or the holiday songs on the radio…but the fact is, it happens to everyone. Your child could be asking for the race car set he saw on TV, the fancy sneakers, the cell phone, and in my world, my son is talking “car”. (gulp) and (no way)!

What if, for one moment each day from now until the Dec 24th, we could refocus our attention from what we “want” to what we’d like to give to someone else? Maybe that would provide a little more balance. The RE kids , with help from our teen mentors and adult assistants, will be creating “Giving Trees” this Sunday during the One- Room School House.

Similar to an using an advent tree, kids can count down to the holidays by thinking of one thing each day that they would like to give to someone else. Maybe one day the gift could be a smile for a friend, and the next could be a hug for their sister, and the next could be a card and cookies for a lonely neighbor. It might be fun to think of all the simple things that you can do to “give” to someone else. It could be as simple as a thought or a prayer, or as fancy as a homemade gift!! Every time your child “gives” they should place a sticker over the date and notice how good it feels to give. Maybe it might even feel a little better to give something than to get something. Pretty soon, it could be the special day where they may receive something special in return. Parents, use the tree as it best suits your family…and have fun!

The children will also be decorating our church’s “Giving Tree” located in fellowship hall. This year we are asking folks to take a card off the tree, and fill it with a grocery store gift card, and place the gift card in the gray box outside the church office door by Dec 11th , in time for our Food Pantry Distribution. Or, you can bring in hats, mittens,gloves or socks for adults or children and place them directly on the tree. We will donate these items locally to organizations and folks in need. They will be divided up and brought to the Food Pantry and IHN and Donna Kay Rest Home in Main South Worcester.

It is Thanksgiving week and the word “thankful” is popping up in every corner!

Your children are probably hearing the story of the first Thanksgiving. I see media, like Facebook , brimming with daily posts on what people are thankful for. As I make plans to prepare for my family’s Thanksgiving meal; I know I’ve been fortunate to always have a Thanksgiving meal. Somehow, it often takes the word “Thanksgiving” to remind me that I really should be thankful everyday .

As I write this article, I recount the events of this past weekend. My definition of thankful has broadened and goes way beyond having food on my family table this year. I am just so thankful that I am part of this church community. I am thankful when I see so many people coming together in different ways to hold another person up in love and care and community.

Dr Albert Schweitzer wrote :

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by an encounter with another human being. Each of us owes the deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this inner light.

The UUCW community filled 2 large bins with food and donated gifts cards for the food pantry distribution this past weekend. We served 97 families. Dianne Mann staffed the distribution with over 30 volunteers from our church and beyond. These volunteers worked together setting tables up, shopping at the food bank, transporting goods, loading tables, helping clients and cleaning up. These people rekindled the lights of many who are struggling to give their family a decent meal . But the interesting thing is, our community comes together like this every month of the year, not just at Thanksgiving.

This weekend was not all about food on the plate, but also about food for the soul . I saw some other amazing things happening in our community.

After the food pantry, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Aaron gathered with volunteer representatives from our church committees to talk about how to support this church with common goals and dreams.

Sunday morning arrived along with the dedicated teachers and assistants , their lessons and crafts carefully prepared for the youngest among us. Then from our front parking lot, two teams of teen and adult volunteers moved like satellites, bringing their light from our church into neighboring UU communities. The teen choir and their directors gave their gift of music at First Unitarian’s worship service. Simultaneously, another group of teens and adults who volunteered at our recent HOME mission trip traveled to the UU Church of Brookfield . Their mission this day was to support Brookfield’s Youth Group (made up of only 2 teens). Together, these teens and adults ran a beautiful worship service recounting their combined experience during the HOME mission trip.

On Sunday afternoon, two additional parenting groups were formed. With deep thanks,(warmed by delicious soup made by Kristen Payson and Melissa McKeon!), I witnessed a group of human beings gathered to share and support one another. In blessed community, the group spoke of a commitment to rekindle each others’ flames. Sometimes it’s a challenge for us to keep these flames burning bright all by ourselves.

And as the daylight faded into evening skies, the lights were still burning inside our church doors .Our OWL class of 27 energetic 8^th and 9^th grade teens sat in respectful silence as our guest panel of volunteer speakers told their open and emotional stories of what it was like to grow up as a bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender person . I was thankful that these adults (from outside our own church community) gave their time to our teens. They inspired all of us in that room to continue to understand and to be allies with all fellow human beings in a world that often seems so cruel.

Finally, I was really feeling thankful (and tired- in a good way!) at 7pm when fellowship hall was again bustling with the new energy of 25 high school teens and volunteer advisors. Our teens were communing with teens from area UU churches to plan a teen- lead conference. Fourteen teens volunteered to lead workshops and share passions that burn bright in their hearts. As the Youth Group met in one end of our building, I was deeply aware as to just how many purposes this building and this community of ours serve: At the other end of our building, at that very same time, co-journeyers gathered in love for the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

So, yes I feel thankful …but not just for the turkey and mashed potatoes. Thank you, UUCW, for continuously rekindling my inner light and faith in humanity.

Weaving a tapestry of Love and Learning

LUCKY COFFEE HOUSE 11-11-11 Big Thank-You’s All Around!

The High School Youth Group thanks all of the amazing performers, helpers, and audience for making this one of the best coffee houses ever! We loved the feel, and the eclectic sounds of so many different types of performances. Thanks for showing up and making this happen! We raised $348 towards our Youth Group Activity Fund. This keeps our group alive and kicking and we appreciate your help with that!

Group Success!

Thanks to parents from the new Familes of Young Children Group (ages 0-K). We had a wonderful start-up covenant group meeting this past Sunday at 9:00am with 12 adults in attendance, their children in childcare in our nursery. The group has begun to discuss topics generated from Michelle Richard’s book “Tending the Flame” as it relates to their personal family situations. If you could not make this meeting, please try and catch up with this wonderful group at their next meeting on Sunday December 11, at 12:30pm.
